Ladies, if you want to strike true terror in a man’s heart, tell him you redecorated the house while he was away. Besides the obvious issue of not consulting him on design choices, he’ll probably envision lace trim, floral prints and crocheted tea cozies. Believe me, nothing sends a shiver down a man’s spine like the prospect of a crocheted tea cozy on his (formerly) manly dinner table. (Of course, if you want to be really cruel, you can tell him you spontaneously redid the interior in a Disney theme. It happened to a cousin of mine. It wasn’t pretty.)
It’s true - men and women look for different things when it comes to interior design. How can you be sure to choose pieces that are pleasing to both genders?
Men look for function. Women tend to like function as well, but beauty is generally a little more important. Women like pieces that can pull double duty, such as an artfully designed coffee table with hidden storage space. Women also gravitate toward curvy lines and touchable fabrics, while men prefer clean, straight lines and sturdier upholstery, like leather. Something in a luxurious suede would be a good compromise. Women tend to be a little more on the thrifty side when it comes to furniture purchases. Men look for high quality pieces. Again, it’s possible to find middle ground with all the sturdy yet affordable pieces offered by retail and contract furniture providers. For example, the teak bistro area furniture pictured here. It’s simple and sturdy, but the legs are curved just enough that it could also go with a more romantic decor.
It really is possible to please men and women with the same furniture choices. One needs only to know what they’re looking for, and find a piece that incorporates those qualities.
