Commercial Furniture With a Twist: The Vertibral
Odd looking furniture is my favorite furniture of all. And if I had seen the pictured unit out of context, I would have had no clue what it was. Is it a giant wooden Slinky? The skeletal frame of a twisty corridor? Modern Popsicle stick art? Lo and behold, it is furniture; specifically, a “seating / table / storage unit”. Now that’s darned impressive.
Meet the Vertibral, a versatile and flexible unit made in four connecting segments. Yes, it can be bent and curved to fit just about any space. The Vertibral unit can be extended by interlocking units for a maximum length of 2600mm, or it can be separated into individual pieces.
Looking at the Vertibral, I think of all kinds of inevitable questions. For example, what was the inspiration that caused Joseph Keenan to design something like this? Does it actually work well as a storage unit? Does it chafe if used as a seating unit? And if you use it as a table, do your utensils ever get lost in its cracks?
I can’t decide. Maybe with some leafy silk plants and light colored interior, the Vertibral could be made to look woodsy and interesting rather than just odd. For ultra trendy eateries looking for modern bistro furniture, it doesn’t get much more modern than the Vertibral. What do you think? Does the Vertibral look like something you’d want to see in your home or business? Or is the world not quite ready for twisty, bendy furniture?
The Vertibral’s dimensions are: Overall Height, 450mm; Seat Height, 450mm; Width, 650; Overall, 2600mm; Depth: 450mm. It can be viewed and ordered at the Stylecraft web site.
