Holiday Furniture Charities: Give Furniture to the Poor
The holiday season is about sharing and caring. We share what we can with the people we care about. How about sharing some care – and furniture – with those who can’t afford their own?
Lots of places are accepting charity furniture donations this season. If you’re feeling the urge to give, the type of furniture is less important than the condition it is in. Residential or commercial grade furniture will be happily accepted as donations; family dinner tables will be just as appreciated as bistro furniture. And remember that you can write off those donations when tax time rolls around.
Some furniture stores are feeling the holiday spirit, too. Ashley Furniture HomeStore in Las Cruces, New Mexico, is taking nominations for families to receive free furniture for their home. Their “All I Want for Christmas” giveaway started last year, and was so successful that the store owner decided to keep it going. Giveaway organizers are finding that most of the entries they receive come not from the needy families themselves, but from concerned neighbors asking for furniture on behalf of less fortunate members of their communities. That gives me a warm feeling inside. Giveaway winners will receive dining room, living room, and bedroom furniture for their homes.
If this story inspires you, why not set up a furniture giveaway at your own business? With a little advertising, you’re sure to find plenty of helpful souls who will assist in organizing such a drive. Clean out your gently used, unwanted furniture, and give it to someone who cannot afford their own. Even if you just donate to a neighbor or needy friend, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you did a good deed this holiday season.
