Marble Coffee Tables for Your Lobby: The Bong from Giulio Cappellini
I confess: when I hear the word ‘Bong’, I don’t immediately think of coffee tables. But there is at least one coffee table out there bearing this dubious title. I must say that it’s not shaped exactly like its shady namesake, so I will assume the table was named for onomatopoeia, and not for paraphernalia. *Bong!*
Despite its entertaining name, the Giulio Cappellini Bong 2007 Coffee Table is all business. The web site where it is listed does not tell the dimensions of the table, but I can’t imagine it would be too huge if it was designed as a coffee table. Still, the Bong looks like the white elephant of coffee tables. I imagine my eyes would be drawn to it, but I wouldn’t have anything witty to say about its appearance. Then I’d have to resort to obvious jokes, like, “This is my Bong!” and “Have you seen my new Bong yet?” (And trust me, we can’t allow that to happen.)
But everything has a place, and the Bong could likely find a home with certain businesses and decors. It is described as a “round coffee table available… in the new faked white Carrara marble finish coming from the Dip-Print system, a technique which allows to decorate three-dimensional surfaces.”
Well, that certainly sounds interesting. Paired up with some contemporary hotel seating in contrasting colors, I can envision the Bong dressing up a trendy lobby or reception area. The faux marble would also put it right at home with more classical decorating schemes full of pillars and statuettes. I also imagine it would look lovely with a pot of vivid flowers on top of it, or even a miniature bonsai or holiday tree. With the Bong, the only limit is the designer’s imagination.
