Modern Chairs: The Pantonic

thumb_verner_panton_hag_pantonic_chair_hih.jpgSometimes I feel a little guilty because I give a bad rap to some of the more outlandish furniture designs out there. I mean, I should give respect where respect is due; I certainly couldn’t come up with some of those wild concepts and then turn them into something tangible that people could, allegedly, sit on comfortably. And besides seating, these crazy chairs give us furniture bloggers something entertaining to write about. So I should really be thankful, right?

In keeping with that line of thought, I would like to formally give thanks for the Verner Panton HÅG Pantonic Chair. I mean… it’s…. just…. I mean, look at the thing. I’ve seen furniture modeled after various fruits and medieval torture devices, but I have never before seen a chair that looks like something juicy that just slid down my wall to form a puddle on the floor. Maybe I’m just too unsophisticated to appreciate its innovative design. Or maybe it really does look like a giant plastic dog just had an accident. I feel too perplexed to judge. What do you think?

The Bonluxat web site has this to say: “You will smile when you see it and smile even more when you sit on it. HÅG Pantonic reacts immediately to every kind of movement and will encourage you to change your sitting position. Just what the body likes!”

I can see why it would encourage occupants to change their positions. Just looking at it, I imagine I’d want to change to a standing position, and then a walking away position, fairly soon after sitting in it. But since I haven’t had personal experience with this chair, I’ll just leave it up to the readers to decide if they think it would be a good addition to their home or business. Would you be more inclined or less inclined to visit a restaurant with commercial cafe chairs that looked like the Pantonic?
