Mosaic Bistro Tabletops: Add Color to Your Bistro

Auto Date Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

Traditionally, bistros were small, family-owned establishments situated near a busy street or a beach. It was easy to walk up and grab a quick meal in an informal setting. Wine and classic French foods were served, usually family recipes that had been handed down. The menu was simple, the hosts were familiar, and the atmosphere was friendly and quaint.

Today, even large, expensive restaurants are calling themselves bistros. This is testament to how integrated the term has become in all levels of society.

mosaic-tabletop.jpgIf you’re thinking of creating a home bistro, or if you want to spruce up your commercial bistro furniture, you can make a traditional choice by selecting mosaic tops for your bistro tables. Mosaic tops are made from bits of glass or ceramic tiles, inlaid into the tabletop in an attractive design. They can be very colorful and fun to look at, but both types requires constant, careful cleaning and maintenance.

Glass mosaic bistro tabletops are beautiful, but should be stored during wet or extremely cold periods. For maximum benefit, they should also be protected by a waterproof tarp or covering when not in use. Nothing heavy should ever be rested on them, as the surface can be easily damaged this way. Cleaning should be done with as gentle a cleanser as possible. If plain, warm water won’t suffice, try a soap that’s non-abrasive and non-acidic. Clear glue or sealant should be immediately applied to any cracks that occur.

The care of tile mosaic bistro tabletops is similar. Store them during harsh weather, and cover them when they’re not in use. When they need cleaning, you can try household cleaners made specifically for tile. Use the cleaner on a small patch of the tabletop first; if the tile is damaged or discolored by the cleaner, at least you won’t have ruined the whole surface.
